INNER PATH

What Is a Spiritual Journey, And Why Does It Begin With You?

A reflection on the nature of inner pilgrimage

Most people think a spiritual journey begins with a ticket to India, to the mountains, to some ancient temple where enlightenment is said to live. And while sacred places do carry a certain grace, the real journey has nothing to do with geography.

“The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone.” - GOETHE

A spiritual journey begins the moment you stop running from yourself. It begins with a question that no answer can silence:

Who am I, truly?

Not the name, not the role, not the story you have been telling since childhood, but the awareness that notices all of this. That silent witness. That is where the path begins.

The Inward Turn

In the Sufi tradition, we speak of the journey as a turning inward what the mystics call tawajjuh an orientation of the heart toward its own source. The heart is not a metaphor here. It is a real center of intelligence, of feeling, of knowing that goes beyond the rational mind.

When I first came to sit in meditation in the desert outside Jaisalmer, I thought I was there to find peace. What I discovered instead was the noise I had been carrying for decades and beneath that noise, an extraordinary stillness I had never known existed.

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there.” - RUMI

That field is the beginning of every genuine spiritual journey. You do not need to travel to find it, but sometimes, travel is what breaks open the shell that has kept you from it.

Inner Pilgrimage, Outer Journey

So where do Spain and India enter this story?

For many years, I have walked between two sacred landscapes: the wild coasts and quiet villages of Spain, and the golden deserts and ancient temples of India. On the surface, they are very different worlds. Yet beneath the surface, they share the same invitation:

Come home to your own heart.

When we travel together on retreat whether along the mystical paths of Spain or through the deserts and cities of India - we are not escaping life. We are creating a clear mirror in which the inner journey can be seen more easily.

The outer journey gives the soul a landscape. The inner journey gives the soul a voice.

Three Signs You Are Ready

You may already be on the path without realizing it. Here are three quiet signs that a spiritual journey has begun within you:

1. You feel a longing you cannot name

Something calls - not toward something external, but toward a deeper version of yourself. You have tried to satisfy it with success, relationships, achievement and while these bring their own beauty, the longing remains.

This longing is not a problem to fix. It is a compass.

2. You are willing to sit in discomfort

The spiritual path is not an escape from difficulty. It is a willingness to meet what arises fear, grief, joy, confusion with an open and curious heart.

If you can begin to do this, even for five minutes a day, you are already walking.

3. You sense that silence has something to offer

Not emptiness but fullness.

If you have ever sat by the ocean or in a forest and felt, for just a moment, that you were home, then you know the quality of silence I am speaking of. That is the doorway.

The journey does not require you to be a certain kind of person, to follow a specific religion, or to leave behind your ordinary life. It only asks for sincerity a genuine willingness to look inward, to soften, and to listen to what has been speaking to you from the very beginning.

Why Travel, If the Journey Is Within?

If the real pilgrimage is inward, why do we gather in Spain and India at all?

Because sometimes, the heart needs a change of sky to remember its own light.

When you step out of your usual roles and routines, something loosens. The armor you wear every day becomes a little lighter. In a new land, with a circle of sincere seekers, it becomes easier to hear what has always been whispering inside you.

On our spiritual journeys, we:

  • Sit together in Sufi meditation, resting in the heart

  • Practice sacred breathwork to clear old tension and invite clarity

  • Chant mantras and sacred names, tuning the body to a finer vibration

  • Walk in silence through nature desert, sea, mountains, old streets

  • Share from the heart in small circles, without judgment or masks

These are not performances. They are simple, human ways of remembering.

Spain & India: Two Gateways, One Heart

Each place offers its own teaching.

In Spain, the Atlantic wind, the stone streets, the quiet churches and cliffs invite a softening. Here, the work is often about rest letting the nervous system unwind, letting the breath deepen, letting the body feel safe again.

In India, devotion is woven into daily life. Bells ring, incense rises, mantras float through the air. Here, the work is often about surrender allowing the heart to open beyond the mind’s control, allowing grace to move through you.

In both, the real temple is the heart. The real pilgrimage is the one that leads you back to the simple, living presence that has never left you.
